How To Set and Achieve Your Goals

This is an excerpt from my note on 'How to Set and Achieve Your Goals' presented at the "Be-Inspired Conference", Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

I'll start with this: You can't have yearly, monthly or daily goals if you don't have a Life Goal. In other words, if your life has no direction, if you've got no vision for your Life, your monthly or daily goals will be ineffective. You need to have a Vision for your Life before you can properly set goals.

So, What are Goals?
Goals are simply targets or ends you work towards achieving. There are several types of goals;

Career goals
Spiritual goals
Relationship goals
Financial goals
Health goals
And many others.

Why You Should set Goals

1. Goals keep you motivated.
It makes life inspiring and interesting. They give you a reason to wake up early in the morning, get outta bed and hit the road. The bigger your goals and the clearer they are, the more excited you become about achieving your goals, the greater  becomes your inner drive and desire to accomplish them. Goals show you where you are, where you're heading and how you'll get there.

2. Goals keep your life organized.
You'd know what you should be doing with your time and energy. It gives meaning and purpose to all you do. And it can finally translate itself into daily activities so that you are proactive, you are in charge of your life, you are making happen each day the things that will enable you to fulfill your vision.

6 Keys to help you set and achieve your Goals

1. Have a clear picture of where you're going.
In other words, know what you want. Your goals should always be in line with your life's purpose. Your vision.
2. Write it down. Think on paper.
When you write down your goal, you crystallize it and give it tangible form. You create something that you can touch  and see. On the other hand, a goal that's not in writing is merely a wish or fantasy. It has no energy behind it. Unwritten goals lead to confusion.
3. Find out what it takes and Break it down into chunks.
Defining your goals isn't enough, you should first research your Goals and also break them down into smaller and achievable chunks. For instance, if you want to write a book in the new year, you can break it down into one paragraph or page a day. If you want to lose weight, you could decide to take a walk or exercise for 20 minutes daily. When you break your goals down like this, it becomes easier to work on and achieve.
4. Pray About it.
Don't just go to church to bind and cast demons. Pray about your goals. Commit your plans into God's hands.
5. Stay Hungry.
Don't be satisfied with the current results. There's always something better ahead. Stay Hungry for more. Keep breaking your own records.
6. Take Action.
Take action on your plan immediately. Resolve  to do something every single day that moves you toward your major goal. Read, Practice a song, Rehearse the steps, work out, just do something everyday.

You are God's Masterpiece

In the art world, experts are always on the lookout for fakes and imitations. To the novice, a counterfeit can be mistaken for a masterpiece. However, an expert, someone who knows what to look for, can easily identify an original masterpiece.

Merriam Webster's Dictionary defines a Masterpiece as "a work done with extraordinary skill; especially : a supreme intellectual or artistic achievement". A Masterpiece is simply the best of a person's work. The climax of an artistic endeavor.

After God spent five days speaking the worlds into form, creating the universe, He prepared for the ultimate of His grand and divine design - You. When God created man, unlike anything else He had made, He made man unique and special. He made man in His own image.

"God said, Let Us [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit] make mankind in Our image, after Our likeness, ........." - Genesis 1:26.

God created us in His own image in that He endowed us with Spiritual, Intellectual and Moral likeness to Himself. He made us to be like Him. God created man to be an object of His love. This is why He took time to prepare all you'll ever need in the universe before bringing you on the scene. All creation displays God's glory but only man was created in God's image. Humans are God's representatives here on earth. He made us specifically to show His greatness and love.

"God created us to be like Him in nature and character"

We are not counterfeits. We are Genuine Masterpieces "painted" by the Master Artist. We are not imitations but the genuine article. No other living creature has this amazing uniqueness.

He loves you with such a love that He wouldn't stop in heaven without you; He was willing to give His life than see you perish. He knows everything detail and sees every secret tears. His heart is broken when you're hurt. He cannot bear to see you hew out broken cisterns when the Overflowing Fountain is always free to you.

Always remember this, in spite of what you believe or how you feel, You're Loved. You're the best version of You. He'll leave the 'ninety-nine' for you because you're the climax of all His creations. You're His Masterpiece!

I'll love to know your thoughts and opinions. Don't forget to share this with friends and family.

Sharpen your Axe: How Personal Development Can Simplify Your Life

"If I had six hour to chop down a tree, I'd spend the first four hours sharpening the axe." - Abraham Lincoln

An axe is a cutting tool that consists of a heavy edged head fixed to a handle with with the edge parallel to the handle that is used especially for felling trees and chopping wood (Merriam Webster Dictionary). The axe is considered one of the most effective traditional tools for cutting trees. To effectively carry out this duty for which it is made, the edge of the axe must be well sharpened so it could cut through the wood with ease.

In this context, your axe is the potential, gifts, talents and resources available to you as an individual. Your axe is the tool available to you to solve any problem. This could be your degrees, talents, inherent potential, knowledge or any other thing at your disposal.

"If the ax is dull,  And one does not sharpen the edge, Then he must use more strength;  But wisdom brings success" - Ecclesiastes 10:10
An axe, when it is blunt or unsharpened, leads the user into an energy-sapping exercise, a vain pursuit, unending struggle. This is evidently true in the literal sense. For instance, if an axe, when sharpened could cut down a tree in about thirty minutes with moderate effort from the user. An axe that's not sharpened by the user may take twice as much longer with even more energy, hence, the need to keep the axe sharpened.

The same simple truth also applies to humans. I call this process self-development. When a man fails to sharpen his axe – continually refine himself, renew his mind, add value to himself, continually develop his gifts and talents – struggle is inevitable. Such individual will only be engaging in energy-draining activities. Undertakings that should ordinarily be completed in a short while with little effort will inevitably take much longer and unwarranted efforts.  The scripture regards this to be foolishness. Many believe that to succeed in any field, all that’s required is hard work and resilience. While this may be true to some extent, we should also understand that these qualities aren’t all that’s needed. We need to refine our skills. We need to develop our abilities and gifts. Self-development is the wisdom required.

"We need to develop our abilities and gifts."
However, this process is not automatic. As we all know that the axe doesn’t sharpen itself, but the user sees the need, then he goes ahead to sharpen it. Self-development is an intentional process. It doesn’t happen by accident. It requires a conscious effort. It takes commitment to doing the things that’ll facilitate your growth. Thus could be by practicing your craft, studying, discipline and many other ways depending on goals and area of strength.

"Self-development is an intentional process."

We should also note that self-development, like any worthwhile endeavour, takes time and consistency. Just as you didn’t get to the level you are now overnight, you can’t be all you want to be in one day either. But I assure you, if you’re intentional about it, you’d make much progress than you can imagine.
