Personal Growth 101

The first time many of us heard the word 'growth' was most likely in basic school where it was described as one of the characteristics of living things. Thereafter, it seemed the word almost disappeared from our vocabularies.

What is growth anyway? Growth is simply the process you go through to become your true and best self. It is the season between birth and fulfilment. This short piece, of course, can't explain everything about growth but it'll suffice to give you a head-start and set you on the never-ending  journey of personal growth.

First, we need to understand that life is really all about growth. A man once said "Development of character is the main business of life". How true! The essence of our existence is that we keep growing into our true and best selves.

It is also important that we realize that growth is intentional. Wee don't grow by simply living, by accident or chance. Growth is intentional. Some erroneously believe we grow automatically when we advance in years but that's not true at all. We have to be decisive and commuted to self growth. You see, growth is directly linked to potential. Thank God we all have potential. However, we need to grow to reach and maximize our potential.
We also need to understand that Personal growth is simple but not necessarily easy. So, whether you feel like it or not, you need to grow, and your need to start right now. Some of us are waiting for the 'perfect time'. Truth is, it'll never come. The time to start growing is now. You need to start investing in yourself to become the best you can be.

Though the same principles of growth aplies to everyone, the specifics varies from person to person. So, whatever you need to grow at, there's always a place to start - To grow in your Career, sharpen and improve your professional skills, To grow in your Purpose, increase your self-awareness, To become a better human being, improve your character. To grow financially, leant the principles and dynamics of wealth creation and management.
Whatever it is, just get started! Be committed to a life of constant improvement.

To your never-ending Improvement,

God's Witness To The Gospel

Good morning precious saint of God. It brings me great joy to forward this message from my desk to you.

Hebrews 2:3-4
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

 4  God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will

There's a response from God Almighty to the preaching of the gospel.

To start with, what is the gospel? To answer that,

1 Corinthians 15:1-5
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you THE GOSPEL which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

 2  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

 3  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ DIED for our sins according to the scriptures;

 4  And that he was BURIED, and that HE ROSE again the third day according to the scriptures:

 5  And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:

Follow carefully, I'll paraphrase Paul's mystery of the gospel, the gospel is that Jesus Christ died, He was buried, He resurrected and He was seen, visibly.

He died for the sins of the world, He was buried, so that sins be taken away for ever, He resurrected so the one who was a sinner afore time could become a new righteous creation, He was seen, typifying the glorious life after death of the mortal body.

Now, to the crux of my message, whenever this message of the unchanging gospel is preached, the witness of Almighty God is with signs, and wonders and miracles and diverse manifestations of the Spirit.

Dear Believer and minister, just preach the simple message of the gospel, with or without your permission or jigging the miraculous would invade that atmosphere. Listen to Paul, he said: "I am not ashamed of the GOSPEL OF CHRIST for it is the POWER of God unto salvation to EVERYONE that believes..."

Jehovah's Witness to the gospel is to make Jesus seen as revealed in the Word, this is much more than He was when He walked in Israel, doing miracles and demonstrating the goodness of God.

If He is the same yesterday and today and forever, and of course He is, then miracles are still in vogue today.

God bless you.
You are supernaturally helped.

Your Man in Christ,
Pastor Kenney Erimakonosine.

Do The Needful

Why don't you stop murmuring?
When will you end your complaints?
You have now grown to become the captain of "Team-Excuse" and
The Leader of the "Ain't gonna do that" group.

Hear you Lazybones!
How long will you sleep?
When will you wake up?
How long will you continue to sit in the congregation of the idles?
You desire to eat, but you have not laboured for it.
Even the ants labour hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.
Your voice keeps calling out for help, waiting for the good Samaritan (Most likely a bouncer) to carry you up while you fold your arms around your body.
My dear, you will remain on the same spot till rapture comes.

Do the needful!
Mr Athlete, do your training;
Omo Campus, read your book;
Mr Farmer, arise and plant your seeds;
The believer, start praying and not just wishing.

You may say 'Mr writer, don't you know it is not easy?'
Smiling at your question... Yes! I know. In fact, more than you think you know, but then, you've got to do something.
Your body loves pleasure. Yes, I know. Mine does too,
But we have to train it to work.

Put the you that does not want to do the needful under subjection.
Keep saying to yourself that in your father's house, there is no room for laziness.

Ask yourself 'what am I supposed to do, be doing or should have done that I have failed to do?'
Well, you've got to make a good choice right now.
Rise from your bed each day with determination to do what you ought to do for the day and before you know it, "The rest is a testimony "

Consistency and Discipline: An Athlete's Story

After some quality time of diligent study and close observation of successful people, I've discovered that one of the principal ingredients of success is Consistency that comes from Discipline. Consistency and Discipline are some of the "common denominators" of success. In essence, you'll hardly find a truly successful person who's not Consistent in one or a few undertakings. Consistency comes when self-discipline is practiced in any area of life.
Elbert Hubbard defined self discipline as "The ability to  make yourself do what you should do,  when you should do it, whether you feel like it  or not". It means subjecting yourself to necessities required to achieve your goals. Consistency is however marked by regularity and steady continuity. It means the ability to continue doing the right things that grows you. Truth is, very few people possess this great qualities. Moreover, the good news is that they are skills anyone can learn irrespective of their background, age, gender or education.

Akindeko Oluwafemi Felix is a final-year Accounting student in Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti. He's a track and field athlete. I met Felix some few weeks back and I've always known him to be an athlete yet we never really talked until recently. When we finally had some time to talk some nights ago, the conversation inspired me to write this piece. You might be wondering, why write about his Discipline and Consistency? Well,  they happen to be two of his admirable traits.

Akindeko Oluwafemi Felix also known as Zamane is an 800m, 1500m and occasionally 400m runner. His weekly routine looks something like this; Every Monday, he wakes up by 6am to get ready for the day, have some push ups after praying then he goes to the stadium for proper training from 8am till 12pm. Tuesdays, he goes on a hill walk by 8am then he ends his training by 11am. Wednesdays,  he goes to the stadium to train from 7am till 12pm. Thursdays, he hits the gym for an hour and sometimes a bit longer. On Fridays, he trains from 8am then he participates in a few competitions to see how well he's actually trained for the past four days. He spends the rest of the days in school to either attend classes or do some studying.

Zamane has won several medals in Local and National competitions. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I conclusively declare that Zamane's sucesses so far as an athlete is a result of his discipline and consistency. His routine is an important indicator of his discipline, persistence and consistent efforts to ensure he achieves his goals.

I believe if we all, like Zamane, embrace the art of self-discipline, persistence and perseverance, we'd soon realize that Sucess isn't as hard as it seems. If we'd keep working hard, every single day, at something that moves us towards our dreams and goals, we will achieve them sooner than we think. Stay disciplined and be consistent! Keep moving forward! Keep growing!

Who Are You? (Part One)

It doesn't take much to understand that one of the major challenges of this age is Identity Crises. It's saddening yet true that many don't know who they really are. Imitation and deception characterizes the lives of many in our world today.

Some of us don't know who or what we are. Worst still,  some live the lives others and society have crafted for them. However,  we should understand that the only person we can really become is our true "self" because 'everyone else is taken'

A story was told of a young journalist who was posing to travelers going through Kennedy Airport (USA) this question "What do you consider to be the most disgusting thing in the world?”. There were many answers, all reflecting the devastating conditions of the world climate. Yet, when he saw a young Zen Monk in complete Buddhist dress, the journalist knew this would be a different viewpoint. With eagerness, he awaited the monk’s answer to the question. The monk answered with a counter-question: “Who are you?” startled, the reporter answered, “I am James Martin”. “No, that is just your name, but who are you?” “I am a journalist for a television company” “No, that is just your job, but who are you?” “I am a human being,” “No, that is just your species, but who are YOU?” The journalist finally understood what the monk meant and stood there with his mouth wide open because he couldn’t find anything to say. He really had never thought about “who he was”.

The same could be said about so many people today, young ,old, black or white. Many don't know who they are nor do they understand the significance of their lives. I believe that a sound knowledge of our "self" goes a long way to influence how we see ourselves and how we value our lives. Many have built their Identity, Value and Worth around their Education, Jobs, Wealth and even their marriages. They define themselves by these things. The problem with this is that if anything threatens these things they've built their lives around, their whole self-identity and self-concept becomes totally distorted. Hence,  the importance of an accurate self-knowledge and self-identity.

We need to know who we are. We need to understand and discover our true selves as we grow. That's the essence of life. Trust me, it'll make all the difference in the world because you don't want to spend your life living someone else's.

Stay tuned for the next post on Self-discovery.

Just Do it!

If you stick to this, your life will drastically change in many positive ways. It will take you to places and where you would have never reached otherwise.
If there is anything common among all humans, I think we all at the end want to be just happy. We do the things we do willingly thinking that it will generate a ‘happy’ result. If you ask someone what her/his goal is, what ever that person says; be it ‘I want to win a Grammy’, or ‘I want to win an Olympic gold’, or ‘I want to raise two children’; their actual goal is happiness.
A lot of the times what stops us from achieving happiness is we limiting our selves from achieving happiness. You are the only reason stopping from achieving what ever you want to achieve because you are not doing what ever you have to do.
Now here is a historical fact. Unlike other brands who get taglines form ‘successful’ people, Nike got their’s from a criminal. Gary Mark Gilmore was an American who was a notorious murderous criminal in the 70′s. When asked by the firing squad if he has any last words, "Let's do it" was Gilmore’s last words . Wieden+Kennedy agency who proposed ‘Just Do It’ slogan got the inspiration from Gilmore’s quote. Nike co-founder Phil Knight, who was skeptical about the need for advertising, initially rejected the idea. Phil Knight first said, 'We don't need that shit'," Co founder of the advertising agency Dan Wieden then said “Just trust me on this one.” Nike trust Wieden and just did it. The rest is history. "Just Do It" campaign allowed Nike to further increase its share of the North American domestic sport-shoe business from 18% to 43%, (from $877 million to $9.2 billion in worldwide sales) from 1988 to 1998, and Campaign Magazine described it as "arguably the best tagline of the 20th century,".
What ever thought that comes to your mind stating the impossibilities, limitations and all lame excuses like ‘I don’t have the time’, ‘I don’t have the money’, ‘Its against society’s norms’ is all bull crap. The only difference between you and the guy who stole your dream life partner is she/he just went and asked for it or did it. The only difference between you and Steve Jobs is he believed it was possible and he just did what ever he had to do. The only difference between you and Oprah Winfrey is she believed and just did what she had to do.
You don’t pursue happiness by not doing anything. You just do it.
